More than 25 piecesInstrumentation : Horn and PianoDescription : Tired of the same old arrangements? Want to give your pupils something simple yet rewarding to play? Carol Barratt creates easy pieces that are creative, idiomatic, simple yet rewarding to play and that will really get pupils listening and performing musically, right from the beginning. The pieces in Bravo! Horn take the student progressively through the early grades. They consist mainly of original material, with a few arrangements too - some well-known, some more unusual. These pieces are intended to encourage the student to perform - rather than merely play - whenever the opportunity arises. All too often, the early stages of learning instrument can be a solitary process. Wherever possible, these pieces should be played with their keyboard accompaniments. Hearing the keyboard parts will lead to an awareness and appreciation of different musical styles and a sense of harmony, not just melody. In addition, playing with an accompaniment develops the pupil´s ability to maintain his or her own part while listening to another. And of course, it´s fun! Each collection is scrupulously edited for the instrument by a leading performer.Contenu : Allemande (Gervaise) - Another Wimbledon Waltz! - Astolpho´s Horn - Bed-Rock Blues - Chorale - Crook´s Corner - English Jig (anon.) - Ferryside - Getting a Buzz! - Harvest Time (Latvian trad.) - Howling-bags - In the Limelight - Jewel in the Crown - Minuet (Haydn) - Modal Lament - Moderato (Schmitt) - Mosey Along - On the Wing (French-Canadian trad.) - Rise and Shine! - Round Dance (von der Hafe) - Safe Haven (Norwegian trad.) - Serenade - Shortcake-Walk - St James´ Infirmary (Trad. arr. Barbara Lynn - A Good Woman - Compl.Tribe & Jet...

(1966-79´Tribe/Jet Stream´)(60:57/24) It’s a long journey from London to Fleetwood in Lancashire, but I felt it would be worth it. Barbara Lynn, one of my favourite soul stars, 38 years into her recording career, was booked to play her debut British show. A fear of flying had prevented her from visiting the UK before, so this would be my first chance to see her live. I’m glad I made the effort, as she was great that night , She sang many of the songs featured on this CD, which gathers the singles issued on her manager Huey P Meaux’s Tribe and Jet Stream labels and assorted rarities, including a pair of unissued titles. Barbara Linda Ozen was born in Beaumont, Texas in 1942. At school she mastered the piano and ukulele, so her parents bought her a guitar – a right-handed Gibson, which the young southpaw flipped upside-down and taught herself to play, Hendrix-style. In the mid-50s she was taken under the wing of blues singer Clarence ´´Bon Ton” Garlow, who allowed musically inclined youngsters to hang out and rehearse at his studio. By 1961 she was creating a buzz in local nightspots with her all-girl group Bobbie Lynn & the Idols. Her recording debut came in 1962 with ‘Dina & Patrina’, released on Eric, a small logo owned by colourful local producer Meaux, with whom she would remain under contract until the end of the 1970s. Sensing he was onto a winner, he brokered a deal for her next single, ‘You’ll Lose A Good Thing’, to be issued on Jamie, a label with superior distribution to his own. The plan paid off when the record knocked Ray Charles off the top of the R&B charts. After three years with Jamie, Meaux switched Barbara to his own Tribe label. Many of her compositions were what might be termed women’s songs, and one would be hard pressed to find a better example than her Tribe debut, ‘I’m A Good Woman’. Barbara followed up with the original version of Dan Penn and Rick Hall’s ‘You Left The Water Running’ and a bluesy reading of the Joe Tex-penned ‘Watch The One (That Brings The Bad News)’, the kind of strong narrative number at which she excelled. Her fourth and final Tribe 45 was ‘I Don’t Want A Playboy’, another corker. A brief stay at Atlantic Records in 1968 was followed by a quiet spell, during which newly married Barbara concentrated on family life. She resumed recording in the 70s, this time for Jet Stream. Her releases for the label were sporadic, but included great numbers such as ‘Movin’ On A Grove’ and ‘Give Him His Freedom’. The show in Fleetwood was 12 years ago now, and Barbara hasn’t been back to the UK since. Maybe one of these days I’ll make it to Texas to see her perform live again. Until then, I have a stack of 45s, LPs and CDs to remind me how great she is. ´´A Good Woman: The Complete Tribe & Jet Stream Singles 1966-1979” can go on top. By Mick Patrick

Coral Sea and Midway: The History of the World ...

The growing buzz of aircraft engines disturbed the Japanese military construction personnel hauling equipment ashore on the beige coral sand of Tulagi Island at 8:20 AM on May 4th, 1942. Offshore, the large IJN (Imperial Japanese Navy) minelayer Okinoshima, flagship of Admiral Shima Kiyohide, lay at anchor, along with two destroyers, Kikuzuki and Yutsuki, and transport ships. Six Japanese Mitsubishi F1M2 floatplanes also rested on the gentle, deep blue swell, marking Tulagi´s future as an IJN floatplane base. The men on the beach, at inland construction sites, or aboard the Japanese ships, looked up towards the huge white cumulus clouds sailing on the ocean wind. Taken completely by surprise, the Japanese stood and stared as 13 sturdy-looking dive bombers dropped through the cumulus layer at 6,000 feet, plunging towards the IJN ships. As they streaked lower, the white star on a black disc insignia of American aircraft grew visible on the underside of each wing. This was the beginning of the Battle of the Coral Sea, one that even those fighting it could not know would make history. While the battle is not as well-known as other battles across the Pacific, it set a precedent by pitting enemy aircraft carriers against each other, a battle in which the rival navies themselves never sighted each other or fired a gun at each other. Instead, the fighting was done with the carriers´ aircraft, something that would become more common over time and would result in decisive actions at places like Midway just months later. Furthermore, while it was in a sense a tactical victory for the Japanese, it would end up helping blunt their aggressive push east in the Pacific, making it a crucial strategic victory for the Allies. Although not as well-remembered as D-Day or even the attack at Pearl Harbor that preceded it, the Battle of Midway was one of the most unique and important battles fought during World War II. In fact, the turning po 1. Language: English. Narrator: Ken Teutsch. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/083304/bk_acx0_083304_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.

As the dive bombers roared low, drowning out the soft clacking of palm-fronds agitated by the steady sea breeze, the dark capsule shapes of 1,000-lb bombs broke away from their undersides and hurtled towards the anchored ships. Amid the sudden thunder of explosions, huge fountains of white foam gushed upward, sparkling in the tropical sunlight before collapsing back into the sea. Only as the American Douglas SBD-3 Dauntless dive bombers began climbing out of their attack did the Japanese finally open fire with the four anti-aircraft guns set up on the Tulagi shore. 1.
