The Education of Henry Adams is among the oddest and most enlightening books in American literature. Henry Adams was the grandson of a President and the great-grandson of another one. He was also the son of the American Ambassador to England, and his secretery. As such he rubbed elbows, literally, with Presidents from Abraham Lincoln to Theodore Roosevelt and with many of the great figures of his time. The book contains thousands of memorable one-liners about politics, morality, culture, and transatlantic relations: ´´The American mind exasperated the European as a buzz-saw might exasperate a pine forest.´´ There are astonishing glimpses of the high and mighty: ´´He saw a long, awkward figure; a plain, ploughed face; a mind, absent in part, and in part evidently worried by white kid gloves; features that expressed neither self-satisfaction nor any other familiar Americanism....´´ (That would be Abraham Lincoln; the ´´melancholy function´´ his Inaugural Ball.) But most of all, Adams´ book is a brilliant account of how his own sensibility came to be. A literary landmark from the moment it first appeared, the autobiography confers upon its author precisely that prize he felt had always eluded him: success. This Pulitzer Prize-winner is considered by many to be one of the three greatest autoboigraphies ever written (the other two being Benjaman Franklin´s and Jean-Jacques Rosseau´s). Published shortly after the author´s death in 1918, The Education of Henry Adams is a brilliant, idiosyncratic blend of autobiography and history that charts the great transformation in American life during the 19th and early 20th centuries. 1. In the new novel featuring war veteran Peter Ash, ´´an action hero of the likes of Jack Reacher or Jason Bourne´´ (Lincoln Journal-Star), Ash has a woman´s life in his hands - and her mystery is stranger than he could ever imagine. War veteran Peter Ash sought peace and quiet among the towering redwoods of Northern California, but the trip isn´t quite the balm he´d hoped for. The dense forest and close fog cause his claustrophobia to buzz and spark, and then he stumbles upon a grizzly long thought to have vanished from this part of the country. In a fight of man against bear, Peter doesn´t favor his odds, so he makes a strategic retreat up a nearby sapling. There he finds something strange: a climbing rope affixed to a distant branch above. It leads to another and another, up through the giant tree canopy, ending at a hanging platform. On the platform is a woman on the run. From below them come the sounds of men and gunshots. Just days ago investigative journalist June Cassidy escaped a kidnapping by the men who are still on her trail. She suspects they´re after something belonging to her mother, a prominent software designer who recently died in an accident. June needs time to figure out what´s going on and help from someone with Peter´s particular set of skills. Only one step ahead of their pursuers, Peter and June must race to unravel this peculiar mystery. What they find leads them to an eccentric recluse, a shadowy pseudomilitary organization, and an extraordinary tool that may change the modern world forever. 1. Language: English.
